Review: YSL Touche Eclat Blur Primer + Full face makeup routine

I think this is potentially the longest title of a blog post that I've ever had. And longest introduction. Eeeek. I have such a funny story for you guys. So, if you haven't gathered this already, Jason and I live together. He's basically my best friend, my rock, and if there's one person I could pick to be around for the rest of my life, hands down it would be him. Also *TMI ALERT*, we are super comfortable around each other. I'm no lady. I fart. Yeah, you read that right. Bathroom doors stay open. There are no secrets in our household.

STORYTIME - So, the other night he's peeing, and I'm washing my face, and I turn to blow my nose, knock the behind-the-toilet rack, and watch my beloved beautyblender fall. Right.Into.The.Pee. I seriously almost cried. Jason looked at me (still peeing), and I'm 100% positive I looked the way most people look when they hear something seriously tragic has happened to someone they love. And all I could mutter was a small "oh...", while wincing. And Jason's response? "Pee is sterile". NOPE. Ain't no way I'm sponging pee on my face. To make a short story long, I needed to replace it. I purchased a new one online from Sephora (because going into Sephora in person to purchase is way too dangerous and I know I'll exit with something else in my hands from swatching beautiful items while I walk around), and I went to my trusty retailmenot.com and found a coupon code! They had one for a free deluxe sized sample of the YSL Touche Eclat Blur Primer. Now, YSL is a high-end brand I've been wanting to try for a long time (mostly their lipsticks, but I refuse to spend $36 on a lipstick, I do draw the line somewhere you guys). The coupon code also came with their foundation, but the shade was about 6 shades darker than my skin tone. Sad face. Naturally, I wanted to use this deluxe sample to do a review/first impression for you guys! The full size bottle is a whole whopping $52, so hopefully this will help even just one person decide if it's worth that much money.

The basis for the video review of this product is to apply the primer for the first time on camera with you guys, show you my go-to foundation routine (so that we can skip that part in future makeup tutorial videos), and take you with me a few times throughout the day to see how the primer is performing, and my thoughts on it from beginning to end. If you guys want to see the video, scroll down to the end of the blog post!

The deluxe sample sized primer (full-size this may way be different) comes in a fancy shiny gold box with the YSL logo on it, and a description of the primer. It's kind of ridiculously pretty. Right?

The primer itself comes in a clear bottle with a gold lid. It is a clear primer with small gold flecks in it, which act as an illuminating base. The primer claims to give radiance to the skin, even skin tone, and give the skin a smooth base to apply your foundation.

I couldn't be happier to tell you guys that the full-size product comes with a pump! This deluxe sized sample has this stinkin' weird popsicle stick thing attached to the lid. Honestly, I would've preferred to just pour it out of the container myself! Better have a pump for $52, geeeesh.

Putting the primer on my skin at first, it has the feeling or consistency of a gel. I am used to using the Too Faced Hangover Rx Primer (because I prefer silicone-free), so this feeling was very different for me.

Rubbing the primer onto the skin, it is easy to see right away that a little goes a long way. It definitely has the illuminating effects that it claims to have. I felt that it was too much when I first applied the primer, I could actually see the gold flecks in some places on my skin. However, after putting on my powder foundation, it gave my skin a nice, natural glow, without disco-ball-status shine. The primer definitely made my foundation apply very nicely and evenly on my skin, but I didn't see an even-ness in my skin tone from the primer alone.

Immediately after applying all my makeup, I noticed the difference in the glow that the primer gave my skin. I am wearing Hourglass Luminous Light as an extremely natural highlight, dusted very lightly on my upper cheekbones and nose only. You can see the glow on the apples of my cheeks (I am wearing only a matte blush) and my forehead, where I didn't highlight. I can appreciate the luminosity that this gave my skin because it looked natural and beautiful, not oily, not greasy, and not golden-goddess or anything over-the-top. The finish, in all honesty, was kind of perfection. The primer made me feel like my skin was truly beautiful (much needed with my recent breakouts...too much chocolate)!

Forewarned...this is different lighting, but this is my skin at the end of a 10 hour day wearing this primer. You can still see the natural glow on the centers of my cheeks. I only have two negatives to mention about this primer, and one is just a personal decision and me being picky.

The first negative is the creasing on my forehead. I did a lot of filming that day, some grocery shopping, and a fashion post, I talked a lot and made a lot of facial expressions throughout the day. I was out in the sprinkling rain as well. It was clear where on my forehead my expression lines lie, because there was creasing in all those areas. This was disappointing for me because I've never experienced this issue with a primer! My T-zone was a bit oily, but I always expect this from all primers at the end of the day (to expect otherwise at the end of 10 hours would be a bit ridiculous).

My last complaint is that the primer is silicone-based (not my cup of tea). It felt silicone-based when I first applied to my skin, but not nearly as silicone feeling as most silicone-based primers feel. After having an inkling about it, I looked up the ingredients so that I could tell you a bit more about the primer. While it is silicone-based, it is also non-comedogenic, and is infused with four healthy oils, which is awesome.

If it weren't for my sensitive skin, I would definitely use up the rest of this sample. Although it says sensitive-skin-safe, everyone's skin is different, and silicone-based primers have always reacted poorly with my skin. That being said, the consistency of this primer for being a silicone-based primer was really impressive. The finish it gave my foundation was really beautiful, and the lasting power for the most part was truly impressive. On one hand, I loved the primer, but on the other hand, not enough to spend $52 to buy myself a full-size, that's downright ROBBERY! But, if you have the luxury to spend on high-end makeup products like this one, it is cupofthoughtsandabagoftea-approved!
